Or, is Classroom Training Show Business For Ugly People?
I heard this line recently and I thought it was hilarious, and in my own case, 100% true!
Chances are that you’re reading this blog on your smartphone, which is understandable because I wrote the blog on mine! So if the smartphone has revolutionised the way we learn, then where have all the classroom trainers gone?
Well quite simply, they haven’t gone anywhere! And for many people, the classroom is still the preferred method of learning delivery, as they will consider that they’ve not been properly trained unless they’ve sat in a meeting room listening to a PowerPoint presentation. The simple fact of the matter is that presenters love a classroom too, because the training platform is a little bit ‘show biz’ and allows a trainer to take centre stage and well, ‘show off!’ As a classroom trainer myself I freely admit that it’s a more than a little addictive, and who doesn’t enjoy being the ‘sage on the stage!’
But if your experience of classroom training is listening to a monosyllabic presenter armed with an endless supply of bullet-pointed slides interspersed with cringe-making roleplay, then I can understand your reluctance to participate. However, classroom training can be effective, and it doesn’t have to be ‘death by PowerPoint!’ When done well, good things can happen in the classroom, a safe place where people can practise, make mistakes, gain feedback and observe others can be created. Put that together with a skilled facilitator who can guide participants through a journey of discovery of new skills and capability and you’ve got a pretty powerful combination.
Understandably, there is still a school of thought that will believe that eLearning is expensive and people would need to be trusted to read stuff and figure content out on their own, and I appreciate that for many, it’s a learning platform still to be embraced.
So, if all roads lead to Rome, then here at Chrysalis Consulting we’ve already got our togas on! We are as much at home delivering stimulating, thought-provoking classroom based training as we are in creating an interactive and fun piece of eLearning. We love both, we’re good at both! We understand there’s a need for both, so both is what we do.
We offer an array of classroom based workshops that embrace one-to-few, through to one-to-many.
So, if you want your training to persuade people, answer their questions, and foster discussion and debate as a route to changing people’s attitudes and beliefs, then a Chrysalis Classroom Course is a hot ticket event!
We think Sue must be a ‘Master of the Dark Arts’, as she has hidden depths! Running our office with meticulous planning and capability, Sue is an avid list writer with a keen eye for detail. But don’t be fooled by that organised demeanour, for Sue is as creative as she is efficient! A skilled communicator with a humorous edge, Sue is as passionate about people and their learning and development as she is about becoming the future Mrs Tom Hardy or Mrs Benedict Cumberbatch (either will do!). An interesting career path has taken her from the glamour of working in luxury London hotels to the chilled Distribution Centres of supermarket retail, and whether managing small groups or large teams, people are at the heart of everything Sue does.
