At the risky of sounding self-indulgent and over sentimental, I decided to write this short piece, firstly, because it’s true, and secondly, to dedicate it to Kelly Swingler, and everybody involved with and who donated to the Retrak team who have just returned from Uganda.

Earlier, I was going about the usual weekend chores, grumbling about the amount of washing my ‘other half’ generates on a weekly basis, the kitchen radio playing away in the background as usual, when a song came on that always stops me in my tracks…

I’m referring to John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’, a song of simple perfection. Whenever I hear it, I just have to stop and listen and sing those famous lines along with John. It’s always been on my ‘life playlist’, all the more poignant since losing my Dad, as he loved it too. So, in my kitchen, I stopped, and I listened…

And I thought of the photos I’d seen over the week that Kelly and the Retrak team had added to Social Media. Not hundreds of photos of course due to lack of wi-fi, and more importantly, the need to protect privacy, but just enough to show enormous smiles, energy, empathy, hope and understanding.

The line that always packs a punch in the gut for me is “Imagine no possessions, I wonder if you can.” Because of course I can’t, in my ‘first world’ life how on earth could I? And coming closely after me ‘slavering’ over Apple’s latest phone offerings (a belated birthday gift) made it all the more powerful.

However, I make no apology for it, how can I? My life is an accident of birth, and I’ve never known hardship, but being part of the buildup to Kelly’s trip and seeing the photos of her actually in Uganda also serves as a life lesson, just as much as the words that I’ll leave you with…

John Lennon, Plastic Ono Band

Imagine there’s no heaven

It’s easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion too

Imagine all the people living life in peace, you

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you

You may say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope some day you’ll join us

And the world will be as one
